Bonnie Brae is located between Exposition, Mississippi, South Steele and University Boulevard. Originally, the tract of land that is now Bonnie Brae was obtained from a grant to the Kansas Pacific Railroad in 1870. George Olinger purchased the property with his land development company, Associated Industries, and development began in the 1923. Under the supervision of S.R. DeBoer, a respected landscape architect, Bonnie Brae was designed to flow with the natural topography of the land and resembled a village in Scotland, complete with a central park, curving streets and easy access to local shops. Bankruptcy of Associated Industries in the late 1920’s stalled further development of Bonnie Brae. However, the creation of Ellipse Park in 1936, built adjacent to Bonnie Brae, generated renewed interest in construction for the neighborhood during the 1940’s and 1950’s. Within minutes of the beautiful Washington and Observatory Parks and the historic Bonnie Brae Tavern, in operation since 1934, new construction continues to spring up throughout the neighborhood.

While Bonnie Brae, meaning “Pleasant Hill” in Gaelic, has roots in the Scottish tradition, you will now find Cape Cod, English Tudor, Art Moderne, brick ranch and other architectural influences. This neighborhood has experienced a recent revitalization effort, resulting in new construction in the midst of the beautiful, historic architecture.
